The night was cold, dark and on the edge of a coming storm. The ritual we performed that night was part of a larger working—one meant to balance the energies between Earth and Cosmos. Sacred sites across the British Isles had been chosen for their alignment with major ley lines, channels of energy that crisscross the land, forming a web of power that has long been revered by those attuned to such forces.
It was late—long past midnight—and a deep awareness settled over us. Something was different. Unlike the other rites, this one held a sense of resistance, as if the energy was tangled, obstructed. The air itself felt heavier, charged with the wildness of the coming storm. We knew we would have to work harder to complete our task.
My fellow priest stepped away to check the perimeter of the circle and our wards, leaving me to begin the invocation and to channel the energies from sky to ground. With my arm raised, I felt the energy building beyond what I could manage alone. I needed balance, the male to my female energies, the grounding to my channeling. Just as I was about to call to my companion, I felt him. He stepped up behind me and wrapped his arm around me, his splayed hand resting over my stomach. His other hand encased mine, guiding my gesture further skyward. The flow of energy smoothed, becoming effortless, natural.
In that moment, from the corner of my eye, I saw that my companion was still at the edge of the circle. That was the moment I met my Guide that has been with me the many years since.
The Inner Landscape
Before that night, my spiritual journey had been a series of experiences that never quite formed a coherent whole. I had studied within covens of various traditions, learning, absorbing, and building a foundation for my path. Yet, despite the rich teachings and shared wisdom, something never quite settled within me. My path, I realized, was to be a solitary one—one that would take me beyond the structured frameworks I had encountered.
Once I moved the the United States, this understanding deepened. My spiritual practice became even more inwardly focused, rooted in the unseen realms. While the term “Hedge Witch” is often used to describe those who work between the physical and spiritual worlds, bridging the mundane and the mystical, I do not claim the title in the traditional sense. Instead, I see myself as a solitary, eclectic practitioner who moves fluidly through meditative work, pathworking, and spirit-led guidance. My practice is deeply personal, a dialogue between myself and the energies I honor.
This inner path has also granted me with what feels to be a profound relationship with the divine, though I recognize that not all are drawn to deity work. Each of us possesses a Wisdom Way – an inner pathway that whether guided by gods, by ancestors or by spirits, or possesed simply of an innate connection to Source, or the Universe, it is the thread that weaves our spirituality into the fabric of our lives.
So where does one begin?
Take the first step by turning inward; by listening and by seeking the stillness within and opening oneself to the quiet wisdom that speaks in moments of reflection.
Your own Wisdom Way
As you consider your own spiritual path, take a moment to reflect:
- Have you ever felt an unseen presence guiding you? What did that experience teach you?
- How do you connect with the unseen—through meditation, ritual, nature, or intuition?
- What energies, deities, or guiding principles resonate most with you, and why?
- In what ways can you deepen your connection with your own Wisdom Way?
Your journey is uniquely yours. Trust it. Explore it. And most of all, honor the path that calls to you, and if you feel moved to do so, consider sharing your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.
